Our Territory
The Territory of Melissa
Our territory is a place of enchanting beauty, solemn hills and a crystalline sea. These wonderful landscapes leave a deep and lasting memory of past eras where nature, culture and tradition blended together, recalling the history of the people who have lived and shaped it over the centuries. Our soils offer the best growing conditions for growing grapes
The Village of Melissa
Melissa is a small village in the province of Crotone and is among the most beautiful villages in the Calabrian Upper Ionian Sea and represents the perfect combination of history, culture, nature, food and wine excellence of the area.
The ancient town, perched on a hill overlooking the sea, the D.O.C vineyards and the wide valleys between which mills, granaries and ancient caves nestle, offers a breathtaking view and tells a centuries-old story, starting with the name:
The history of our Cirò and Melissa Wines
The history of our Cirò and Melissa wines has its origins in Ancient Greece, when the colonists arrived on the coast of Ionian Calabria and seeing the extension of the land dedicated to viticulture, they introduced the vines of their land of origin, the Gaglioppo and the Greco Bianco. These vines are fundamental for the production of Cirò and Melissa D.O.C. Cirò is closely linked to the history of ancient Greece as it was the first example of a sponsor or prize offered to the winners of the Olympic Games. This has helped to relaunch the image internationally. In 1969 the Cirò obtained the recognition of the D.O.C. (denomination of controlled origin) which identifies three types of Cirò: White, Red and Rosé.
